What is the project researching, and why is this timely?

The project identifies, analyzes, and quantifies the risks facing the marine environment of the Gulf of Finland in the current geopolitical situation, particularly in regards to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The project is timely because the global situation is unstable, alliances, for example within NATO and the EU are being questioned, and cross-border cooperation in the event of a potential environmental disaster is uncertain.

What is new with the project?

The project develops scenarios on environmental risks, examining the causal relationships linked to those risks, and assessing the impacts of harmful events on the marine environment.

In addition, the project develops new methods and identifies gaps in existing knowledge.

What is special about the project?

The project develops new methodologies and modelling approaches for assessing the impacts of harmful events on the marine environment. These outputs have the potential to generate substantial added value for the project’s primary stakeholders. The CoWup project identifies and analyzes new environmental risks in the Gulf of Finland arising from the current geopolitical climate and the lack of cooperation with Russia.
